The mission of 49th Parallel Dance Company is to foster connections between Canadian and American dance communities and to explore movement innovation through the blending of multiple dance genres. Operating out of The United States and Canada, company directors Ariana Champlin and Carolyn Schmidt are committed to creating opportunities for professional and pre-professional dance artists in both locales through creative processes, productions and educational initiatives. Focusing on collaboration and integration of varied dance forms, 49th Parallel Dance Company hones a distinctive movement style which blends together classical, contemporary, urban and cultural dance traditions while maintaining athleticism and artistry.

The Moving Beauty Series presents artistically provocative yet commercially viable new works. Since its inception in 2008 The Moving Beauty Series has presented work by hundreds of artists. The Moving Beauty Series also serves as the collaborative focal point for artistic director, Juan Michael Porter II in his own vision. For this concert he is working with the musician, Birdmask, the actress Jennifer Mushkin-Goldman, the dancer Lindsey Miller, and his etoile Lucile Jorba y Campos to present: ‘Pierrot; mais je suis clown’.

Janice Rosario is a NYC-based dancer & choreographer. Born and raised in upper Manhattan, Janice grew up surrounded by New York’s vibrant arts scene, where she studied classical ballet, Horton & the Graham technique. She studied on scholarship at Ballet Hispanico, Ballet Academy East, Boston Ballet, the Alvin Ailey School and F.H. LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. She stayed in New York during her college years to attend Hunter College, majoring in Dance. Still based in New York City, she is has been presenting her choreography throughout the city. Her work has been presented at The Secret Theater, Triskelion Arts Aldous Theater, John Ryan Theater, and Dixon Place.

Sunhwa Chung/Ko-Ryo Dance Theatre performs Friday, March 6th, 2015.

Sunhwa Chung/Ko-Ryo Dance Theater seeks to showcase a unique blending of modern and traditional Korean dance without losing the essence of either form. While Ms. Chung’s choreography reflects her background in traditional Korean dance as well as her training in ballet and (especially) modern dance in the United States, her movement is defined not by technique but by her creative engagement with the performance skills and individuality of her dancers. Through collaboration, they develop a heightened theatricality to explore human stories without resorting to narrative. Ultimately, she strives to create movement and performances that reflect the unique capacity for beauty and creative expression of each performer. This theatricality is intended to engage the audience directly and emotionally.

Japanese culture through the lens of a hip-hop aesthetic.

As a choreographer, Cameron believes that what he creates should be stimulating to both the body and the mind. Therefore, he aims to create visceral, athletic, and physically challenging works that are grounded in research. Every gesture and movement is included for a specific reason, or to provide the audience or the dancers with a specific image or frame of mind. Cameron believes that whenever he makes work, he should leave his collaborators with a piece of himself so that his works stay honest.

Inclined Dance Project is a Brooklyn based company that strives to create visually intricate landscapes that display fresh ideas derived from classic dance vocabulary. Inspired and propelled by human experiences, IDP fuses ballet and modern styles with pedestrian qualities to create an innovative form of contemporary dance that has the ability to speak to many age groups and individuals, despite the amount of dance exposure one might have. Inclined approaches dance-making through a set and destroy method, allowing the performers the opportunity to deconstruct the material and incite dialogue, exploration, and personal contribution to a work. The end result is athletic, technical, and dynamic movement that challenges the dancer and engages audiences.

RedCurrant Collective has presented work at Gibney Dance Center, University Settlement, Women in Motion, Dixon Place, Triskelion Arts. Sosa Dance Company aims to bring attention and awareness to mental illnesses by creating pieces that explore depression, mania, anxiety, anger, and despair. Ana Sosa, through the act of creation hopes to give a voice to the people who have been singled out by society with labels that can be easily misinterpreted and misrepresented. As someone who has personally struggled with Bipolar Disorder, Sosa hopes to inspire others to write, dance, sing, and express themselves through any means so they can too benefit from the creativity that comes from being different and from the wonderful outlet that is art. The company focuses on strengthening and developing the intention behind every movement that is choreographed, so that through mutual understanding and communication, the dancers can incorporate their own meaning into the choreography and performance.
