seymour::dancecollective performs in The Series on Saturday, March 14th, 2015.
seymour::dancecollective creates highly physical and engaging work in a hybrid movement vocabulary. The work strives to cross boundaries culturally and aesthetically through an intensive process meant to promote group rapport and idea exchange What began as a collaborative effort between students at The Ohio State University Department of Dance in 2011 has since relocated to NYC and continues to add voices to its creative dialogue. The collective works on a project-to-project basis with a rotating roster of curated artists.
Chafin is a dance artist raised and living in Brooklyn, NY. After growing up with a love of the performing arts, he began his training in earnest with both the Dancewave Company and The Packer Collegiate Institute. He received his BFA with Distinction in Dance from The Ohio State University Department of Dance in 2012. Since graduation he has been dancing and choreographing wherever possible including such venues as Dixon Place, Judson Church, and Center for Performance Research.
Kristen is a performer, an administrator, and an educator. She originally hails from Sarasota, Florida, graduated from Florida State University in 2014, and promptly relocated to New York City. Born and raised in a small artistic community where she began her dance training at the age of five, Kristen studied ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and Irish dancing. Through her experience at FSU and in the field at large, Kristen has had the opportunity to work with brilliant beings such as Dan Wagoner, Gerri Houlihan, Tim Glenn, Jawole Zollar, Rick McCullough, Alex Ketley, Anthony Morgan, Paul Matteson, Jen Nugent, Mark Haim, as well as others. She has had the fortune of dancing professionally in New York for the past year, in addition to making and performing her own work.
Madeline began dancing at the age of six in her hometown, Toledo, OH. In 2013, she graduated with a BFA in dance from The Ohio State University and moved to New York City. She is thrilled to be dancing in projects with Erik Abbott-Main | Boy Friday, Dante Brown | Warehouse Dance, Quentin Burley Dance Group, The Median Movement, and Chafin Seymour / Seymour Dance Collective. When she is not dancing, she loves to teach dance, bake chocolate chip cookies, and work as a member of The Fleet, a dance video production company.
Ellen is a Brooklyn-based dance artist and filmmaker. She recently launched The Fleet, a dance video production company based in NYC. During her time as a BFA student of dance at The Ohio State University, Ellen performed in original works by Bebe Miller, Lily Skove, Ann Sofie Clemmensen, Esther Baker-Tarpaga, Ohad Fishof, and Noa Zuk. Ellen worked as director of photography for Stephan Koplowitz’s dance film installation work-in-progress during Bates Dance Festival 2014, and is returning to the 2015 Bates Dance Festival as the resident videographer. She is currently dancing for Dante Brown | Warehouse Dance, Quentin Burley Dance Group, and seymour::dancecollective. Ellen premiered her site-specific choreographic work, Luminata, with Autumn Scoggan as part of the West Harlem Arts Fund White Light Tour on October 4th 2014.
Rebecca has danced in diverse venues ranging from the Riffe Ohio State House Stage to the dirt floor of an animal show ring to a glass blowing studio in Georgia. Her contemporary modern dance experience began in 2005. She has performed, choreographed, and collaborated in over 90 pieces that include original works and repertory works as well as etudes from Labanotation. Rebecca has prior teaching experiences with children, intermediate level, and advance level movers. She has received her B.F.A. from The Ohio State University cum laude with Distinction in Dance. Her studies focused on performance, dance dynamics, Labanotation, and movement analysis. She also has in depth experience in various body therapies that support an extensive dance life and healing including Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) 500hr Yoga Alliance Instructor, APC Instructor Pilates Mat and Apparatus, and Certified AntiGravity® Fitness Instructor in Fundamentals 1&2, Suspension Fitness 1, and AIRbarre. Rebecca is member of Dante Brown | Warehouse Dance and Abarukas Contemporary Dance Company. She has also been a member of seymour::dancecollective since 2011.
Cheryl began dancing at age 8 at a small after school program in Side. Entering High School she joined Dancewave and performed the works of world-renowned choreographers including Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Doug Varone, Garth Fagan, Paul Taylor, David Dorfman and Susan Marshall. The company performed all over New York City but also got the opportunity to tour Scotland at the International Dance Festival. After high School Cheryl continued her dance training at The Ohio State University. During her time in college she was influenced by the GaGa teachings taught by Noa Zuk and Ohad Fishof who created a solo on Cheryl which premiered at the Israeli Dance festival at LaMama. She currently works closely with Gallim dance as an apprentice.
