DoubleTake Dance performs in The Series on Wednesday March 3rd, 2015 and Friday March 6th, 2015 with a program that explores the perception of time and relationships as they evolve.
DoubleTake Dance is a concert dance company filled with ferociously talented dancers who are able to perform any genre of dance. These dancers fearlessly tackle any and every endeavour with a flawless virtuosity that startles and impresses not only because the choreography is so entertaining but also because it is also emotionally engaging.
Co-Directors Ashley and Vanessa choreograph stories that pull the audience in with a blend of excellent craftsmanship, daredevil trickery, and well honed moments that capture what it is to be alive. This is a company that is unafraid to confront the audience with honesty or to engage it with pure dance moments.
Co-Directors of DoubleTake Dance Co, Ashley Carter and Vanessa Martínez de Baños have been teaching, performing and choreographing for nearly a decade. They’ve performed worldwide and have achieved recognition for their choreography nationally and overseas. Venues and companies include the Ailey Citigroup Theatre, Symphony Space, Webster Hall, NYC SummerStage, Theatre 80, MMAC, Teatro La Tea, Teatro Madrid… Pilobolus, Justin Timberlake, Lush Cosmetics, Sia, El País newspaper, Nicki Minaj, to name a few. They have choreographed several shows (“Tick, Tick, Boom!”; “I Love You, You’re Perfect.. Now Change”; “LoveArtJapan”), events (NYC Half Marathon, Fuse TV, flashmobs), films, commercials, music videos, etc; and have danced for Balasole, Germaul Barnes, Freddie de Jesus, and many more. Both directors are currently on faculty at the Peridance Capezio Center in NYC.
Katie started her training under Terpsie Toon in Watertown New York. She then relocated to Richmond VA to work as a trainee with Richmond Ballet performing in the corps de ballet in classical ballets such as Giselle, Sleeping Beauty and of course, The Nutcracker. Katie then danced for Dayton Contemporary Dance Second Company performing new and original modern works throughout Ohio. She joined the North American tour of the musical “Movin’ Out” in 2008, in which performed both as member of the ensemble in the lead role, Judy. Katie now resides in New York City. She has performed with local companies such as De Funes Dance, JT Lotus, Xaoc Contemporary Ballet, Azul Dance Theater and Community Dance Project. She recently debuted her choreography on members of Community Dance Project. Katie is excited to be a part of DoubleTake.
Ariel recently graduated from the Boston Conservatory with a BFA in Dance. While in Boston, she had the privilege to dance with the opera company “Emmanuel Music,” in their production of “The Rakes Progress”. Recently, she was a performer in the “Cosmic Opera” at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Ariel has been working extensively in many forms of dance media , including “Profane Temporality,” an alternative dance film that premiered in the fall of 2012.
KP graduated in 2013 from Western Michigan University with a BFA in Dance. Throughout her education she performed works created and reset by Ron DeJesus, Autumn Eckmen, Willy Shives, Harrison McEldowney, Lauren Edson, Shen Wei, and KT Nelson. Recently she has performed a version of “if” by Heidi Latsky, and a new work “Becquerel’ by Shawn T Bible. KP continues her dance training throughout the city and working with DoubleTake Dance Company.
Mikki graduated in 2013 from Japan Women’s College of Physical Education with a B.A. in Dance. She has trained a wide range of dance styles, including; ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, latin and tap. In Japan, Mikki worked with Fabien Prioville in the premiere of his work, “KAMIHIKOUKI”. After this she performed at the “INTERNATIONALS TANZFESTIVAL 2008 TANZTHEATER 3 WOCHEN MIT PINA BAUSCH”, and “Bielefeld Tanzfestival 2009” in Germany. In 2013, she returned to Japan to perform “3B” in Tokyo. This past summer Mikki moved to New York City to study at International Dance School Peridance. Sine arriving in New York, she has worked with Jacqulyn Buglisi on ‘The Table of Silence Project’, Tony Waag and the American Tap Dance Foundation on ‘The Jubilee Gala’ at the New York City Center, and DoubleTake Dance on their upcoming concerts.
Jaclyn Birkner recently graduated magna cum laude in 2014 with a B.A. in Dance and Business from Muhlenberg College. While at Muhlenberg she has had the opportunity to work with talented faculty and guest artists such as Karen Dearborn, Jeffrey Peterson, Dorrell Martin, Sammy Reyes, Shelley Oliver, and Charles O. Anderson. She has also had the pleasure of working with choreographers such as KC Castellano, A’drey Vinogradov, Tyler Gilstrap, David Parker, James Tabeek, and David Parsons & company. Jaclyn continues to study dance in New York and is very excited to a member of DoubleTake Dance Company.
Rachel began training in classical ballet in New Bedford, MA and received a B.Sc. in Dance with a second major in Government from Skidmore College in 2012. There, she performed work by Jose Limon, Martha Graham, Robert Battle, Kevin Wynn, Sydney Skybetter, and Summer Lee Rhatigan and graduated summa cum laude with honors in Dance. Rachel spent the next year participating in an artistic residency in Israel, studying with the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company. In New York City, she has performed with Ariel Rivka Dance, Beth Liebowitz & Artists, and DOTA Dance Theatre. Rachel is very excited to join DoubleTake Dance this season!
Jen started her dance training in Thousand Oaks, CA under the direction of Kris Davis-Garcia at The Dance Company in jazz, ballet, tap, and lyrical. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a BS in Business, she danced with Allison DeOliviera’s contemporary company Pack the House Productions, and Saki Suto’s jazz company S4B in San Francisco. Jen now resides in New York and performs with De Funes Dance Company as well. Jen is grateful and excited for the opportunity to work with DoubleTake dance!
